Steer riding has its roots in the historical tradition of rodeo, evolving from the early days of cattle ranching and cowboy competitions. Originally designed as a youth event, steer riding allowed younger riders to develop their skills before transitioning to more challenging events like bull riding. Owyhee County Rodeo of Homedale, ID offers riders the opportunity to hone their riding abilities and gain experience in a controlled setting.


$40.00 (age 8-13 as of Jan 1st).
***Jr Bulls will be pre-rodeo Thursday and Friday, the top 6 riders will come back on Saturday pre-rodeo.

Steer riding remains a popular and exciting aspect of rodeo, contributing to the dynamic and diverse nature of rodeo competitions while preserving the heritage of cowboy skills and horsemanship. Steer riding is a great match for you if you:

  • Are between the ages of 8 and 13 (in effect since January 1st, 2024)
  • Want an exciting and adrenaline-pumping experience
  • Are physically fit, have good balance and are not afraid of falling or getting injured
  • Have experience with horseback riding and are comfortable around large animals
  • Have received training from a qualified instructor and understand the proper techniques for steer riding
